Description:
The ED Technician performs a variety of patient care activities and related procedures in caring for the needs of the patients. He/She assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment.
Observes and reports changes in the physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and social status to the Registered Nurse.
Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, B/P, height/weight and intake/output measurements accurately. Reports findings outside of normal range to RN.
Provides assistance with ADL’s to assigned patients.
Provides assistance to meet personal hygiene and grooming needs.
Provides assistance with the nutritional needs of the patients including feeding, mealtime assistance/set-up, supplying fluids, refilling water pitchers and delivering supplemental/bedtime snacks.
Lifts, moves, turns and transports patients out of bed, chair, stretcher, wheelchair, portable mechanical lift, etc, maintaining proper body mechanics.
Collects specimens as required using appropriate collection technique and specimen labeling. Always uses 2 patient identifiers.
Performs laboratory procedures as noted: venipuncture, EKG, blood culture, urine collection procedures and other laboratory procedures as directed by the Registered Nurse.
Demonstrates competence in performing treatment procedures such as crutch walking, splinting and dressing.
Collects necessary specimens, urine, stool and sputum.
Empties foley drainage, measuring and noting amount.
Assists with preparing the patient for a physical examination.
Assists with admission, discharge and transfer procedures.
Assists patients on and off the bedpan, to and from the bathroom, and assists them as needed following elimination.
Answers call lights promptly and assists patients courteously.
Assists in Code crisis situations; performs BLS.
Administers post-mortem care.
Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent.
1 year of ED Technician experience. In lieu of ED Tech experience, 1 year of Nurse Aide experience OR satisfactory completion of a Nursing Assistant/Medical Assistant/Patient Care Technician training program required.
Preferred experience as EMT.
BLS Certification required.
EKG and phlebotomy certification preferred.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
